HRSD= the Head of Royal Sciences Department. This is Gaster's role.
SPECIALIZATIONS= The royal scientists work on commission, so they kind of do everything sciences-related. However, they do have specific fields that they excel at and are typically assigned to projects based on those specializations. Siqua's is stats; Gaster's is magic/ souls; and Alphys's is.. Well.. the specializations are based off of their college classes. But Alphys didn't go to a proper college so she just does everything. If she had a choice, however, she would specialize in mechanics.

BTA is NOT an Alphyne comic; there's about a 20 year age gap and a huge shift in their dynamic from Undertale...
Interludes are not always fully canon. I use the word "fully" because sometimes it's only small parts of the comic that aren't canon. Other times the entire concept would never actually happen in the real comic. Sometimes the interlude started as an episode, but I made it into an interlude to save time. TLDR; Interludes are just loose concepts, not full installments into the BTA universe, so don't take them seriously unless I say it's canon/ the comic confirms it later.
I try to avoid religious themes in my stories, but Chara is my exception. She's supposed to make me uncomfortable, afterall.
There are four royal departments: royal guard, royal sciences, royal weathering, and royal caretaking.
The Royal Sciences Department's employee system works like this: All employees, except the interns, are established scientist who can perform their own independent studies. However, the hierarchy determines how much independent freedom each role has. The roles in order of most authority are:
the King= Obviously.
Head of the Royal Sciences Department, or "HRSD"= often shortened to just "head". This is Gaster's role. This role has the most scientific freedom.
Handmen= often shortened to just "hands". This is Siqua and Alphys's role. These are two trusted and established scientists who help the head. They have quite a lot of independent freedom, as well.
Assistants= who work in and/or with the castle but mainly perform the behind the scenes science. If they do find time for independent studies, it has to be outside of work hours.
Interns= are in the process of becoming scientists. They can only do what they are assigned.
